onOne Software (of Genuine Fractals fame) is offering a free version of PhotoFrame 4.5. The free version includes 20 free edge & framing effects for Adobe Photoshop. I’m using PhotoFrame 4.5 Free as a plug-in for PS Elements 6 on the Mac and it works like a charm. Check it out – the price is right!

When I switched from PC to Mac in my home office, I lost the use of my Dell All-In-One scanner/copier/printer. I recently replaced it with the Epson Perfection V500. So far, I’m really happy with this scanner. Features include:

  • 6400 x 9600 dpi resolution
  • LED light source – no warm up time required
  • Scan to pdf button
  • Built in transparency unit for scanning slides and negatives
  • DIGITAL ICE technology for scratch and dust removal
  • Includes Photoshop Elements software

What do you use?

The Digital Photography Book Series

Posted: August 22nd, 2009 | Author: jle | Filed under: Recommendations | No Comments »

Volume 3 of Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Book has been out for a month or so and I recently had the opportunity to read my copy (which I had pre-ordered on Amazon). Volume 3 follows the same format and style as volumes 1-2; Scott relates his favorite tips and techniques as if he were “talking to a shooting buddy.” Even though the user level is designated as beginner, there is plenty of good stuff to keep the serious amateur interested! My favorite section of volume 3 is the “Using Flash Like A Pro” section. Check it out for yourself – you won’t be disappointed.

Want to learn Aperture?

Posted: July 18th, 2009 | Author: jle | Filed under: Aperture, Recommendations, Self-Assignment | No Comments »

Read Aperture 2 by Ben Long, Richard Harrison, and Orlando Luna.

I’m working through this Apple Pro Training Series guide for the second time and I am still picking up new tips and tricks. The book is very well written and provides plenty of real life examples to help you understand how and when to use the powerful image management and enhancement tools included in Aperture. The book also comes with a DVD containing the images used in the text as well as lessons that provide over 20 hours of training. After completing the book you can, if you are so inclined, become Apple Pro certified by taking the Aperture certification exam at an Apple training center.

If you want to take full advantage of Aperture 2, this is the guide to follow.
